With the growth to C-class, there was all sorts of new opportunities for Aro. There was a whole new section of jobs that were available to him, and he’d grown to the point where his old gear just wasn’t good enough anymore for the tougher set of challenges he’d face in the near future. He wasn’t the smartest of guild members, not known for above average mental prowess, so he wasn’t well known around the guild library. When he did show up there, people were pretty surprised to see him sifting through books.
“Farmer’s Markets, Stock Markets, where are the Black Markets?” Aro wasn’t the best at this whole dewy decimal system, so it took him awhile to find a set of books on black market locations. It took him even longer to find the book that had the current locations, and then a fair amount of time to decode the information. Aro was quite passionate about this, focusing hard on getting the information he needed. Where ever it took him, he’d go so that his strength would grow even more.
OOC: If the Mod/DM would just pick a populated area (non-city) that would have a black market, Aro will take his gear there to be upgraded. There aren't, to my knowledge, any populated areas close, so the random encounter can be in the next post if the DM wishes, else I'll post more before it.

((Magnolia is the closest spot that would realistically have a Black Market. It's roughly a 4 day walk from Blackmist. I'll have a post up tomorrow with an encounter for you as well as some background on Magnolia.))

After quite a few hours of working on finding the information he was looking for, Aro managed to find something that looked promising. The entry spoke of a man named Lucien. This man was rumored to be in virtually every major town and city at once. As if that wasn’t fantastic enough, the rumors also said that he had a nearly limitless stock of incredibly powerful magical weapons and armor. While this man wasn’t a black market all by himself, he wasn’t picky about his clients and was known to be incredibly discreet. It was clear that going to Lucien was going to be Aro’s best bet.
It wouldn’t be an incredibly hard journey to get to Lucien either. One of his known locations was Magnolia town, and that was only about a four day walk from Blackmist’s headquarters. Magnolia is a relatively new town, but it’s a part of a coastal railway system that has been growing quickly based on imports from Hargeon City. Hargeon is the main port city in Fiore, so almost all interstate commerce flows through there. Towns have been popping up like crazy along the railway between Hargeon and Clover Town, and Magnolia is no exception. Magnolia has largely prospered as a merchant city due to its close relationship with Hargeon City. Its layout is similar to that of any hastily constructed city; there was a clear attempt to make it on a perfect grid, but many times the roads curve and wander around buildings that were put in the wrong spot.
Lucien’s shop was on one of these back alleyways, and Aro knew the spot to look for. In order to get there, he had to venture out of the forest surrounding Blackmist, and this would take him most of a day. The next two days of travel through the grasslands leading towards Magnolia would pass relatively uneventfully for Aro, but the fourth and final day of his journey would not. As he got closer and closer to Magnolia, he began to come across other travellers every hour or two. Most were of no note, but there was one traveller that would be of interest to Aro. A merchant who had only brought a single guard with him had had the misfortune of his wagon breaking down. A wheel had shattered, stranding the merchant where he was less he abandon his cargo. The wagon itself was covered, so there was no way to know exactly what the merchant was carrying, but the merchant’s profound fatness and elegant robes made it clear that his cargo was probably valuable. The guard looked relatively young and inexperienced. He wore a full suit of iron armor, sans a helmet. The man was rather thin, and it was honestly surprising that he could even stand in such a heavy suit of armor. If one had to place a guess, he was probably no older than 17. Despite this, he was the only visible guard for this wagon. The lone guard leaned tired on his lance, largely unaware of Aro’s presence. There were several paths that Aro could take here. He could overpower the guard and seize the wagon’s contents. Alternatively, he could simply try to scare them off. If Aro was feeling like a good Samaritan, he could even try to bring a new wheel for the merchant’s wagon.

Here was something promising, a man named Lucien who was well established enough to handle anything that Aro would need him to do. Scribbling down some rough specifications that he wanted done to his items, and storing that inside his metal gauntlet, he was ready to set off for Magnolia. It was a fairly long walk, around four days one way, but that wouldn't bother Aro, who liked the outdoors. He was wild at heart, and enjoyed meandering through the grasslands, biting the heads off of crickets every once in awhile. "A giant cricket, with a massive head, now that would be a delicacy..." On the last day of the journey, the man from BlackMist started to run into people, which made him quite irritable.
Some of them, Chaos forbid, even tried to make small talk with him. A short growl always sent them away and he had been in peace most of the way into Magnolia. He wasn't too far away from the city when he came across a broken wagon, with a fat man and a child to guard it. Obesity was something that had no excuse in this day and age, and Aro knew it better than most. As an orphan, he had gone hungry many a night, and after his exile he had spent many a day starving if he didn't manage to catch his own food recently. Aro decided to stop and investigate this greedy grub-hoarder. He approached the wagon with a snarl to alert them of his presence.

Aro’s method of introducing himself didn’t exactly go over too well with either the merchant or the guard. The merchant was scared enough by the noise to bolt into his wagon. A disturbingly high-pitched shout echoed out from outside “Make him go away!” The voice seemed far too effeminate for it to belong to such a large man, but there were no other detectable presences beyond that of Aro, the merchant, and the guard. The guard’s reaction was equally predictable. He was practically shaking in his boots without Aro even trying to scare him. Clearly nervous, he stuttered “S-s-stop right there you. D-don’t get any c-c-c-closer to the w-wagon!”
This command had been accompanied by a thrust of the guard’s lance in Aro’s general direction. Overall, this preliminary aspect of the encounter would give Aro an idea of this guard’s capabilities. This guard was clearly as much of a novice as he appeared to be. His movements were slow and untrained. His reaction time was pitiful, like that of a toddler who took too long to figure out if it needed to poop. Disposing of this guard would be no issue for Aro if he so wished. The pathetic quality of the guard would likely give wise to one question though: If the guard was so pathetic, would he actually be guarding anything valuable?

The guard was so spooked that he tried to attack Aro. This would not go unpunished. Aro simply sidestepped the thrust of the lance and snapped his hand outwards. The biggest weakness to a lance was that all of the sharpness, the threatening part, was focused on the tip, making the rest of it basically useless besides being a blunt weapon for bludgeoning. Aro grabbed this part with his gloved right hand, and hoisted it upwards, throwing the guard off balance. Aro wasn't strong enough to lift and flip the boy, but he could cause his arms to be upwards, no longer guarding his stomach. The arm with the gauntlet shot forwards to slam into the boy's midsection, which would not only hurt a lot but also apply pressure to the diaphragm causing the air in the kid's lungs to be forced out. {15 damage -5 armor reduction +3 armor penetration = 13 damage}
Throwing the lance backwards to send the guard off balance and have him land on his back, Aro roared at him, spit flying and probably striking the boy in the face. "Just get out of here, Kid, don't sacrifice your life for nothing." Deep down, Aro wasn't purely a heartless evil maniac. Though he seemed cold and uncaring on the outside, for orphans and children forced into adulthood there was a difference in how he acted. A sense of understanding of their life and the sacrifices that they must make. He was offering the child the chance to live, to carry on and still make something of himself, instead of throwing it away in recklessness. Aro threw his cloak backwards, showing the glint of his unique gun. If his speed, his intimidation, and his strong weapon wasn't enough to send the guard running, then the fight would escalate. If he ran, then his life would be spared.

Everything worked exactly as Aro intended. He side-stepped the attack (if one could really call that thrust an attack) without it even coming close to hitting him. His blow was strong enough to not only knock the air out of the guard’s lungs, but also to knock him to the ground, clutching his midsection. Needless to say, this motion also caused the young man to discard his lance. If Aro had any desire for such a weapon, he could freely claim it in this moment with ease. Truth be told, he could claim it at any point now. His intimidation tactics had proved more than enough for the fragile mind of this young guard. After a moment of getting his breath back, the guard stood and quickly ran away towards Magnolia as fast as he could.
Moments after the guard started running away, the voice of the merchant came crying out of the wagon. “I heard running,” he wailed. “Did you send that brute packing?” There was an obvious air of fear in the merchant’s voice, but he had been too busy hiding to see what had just transpired. He didn’t know his guard was the one who had run away, and this gave Aro an opportunity to collect some loot non-violently if he so desired. On the other hand, the merchant was so fat that Aro could probably fire blindly into the wagon and hit him.

The discarded lance was garbage, and wasn't even worth a second glance. It might be good for scrap metal, but Aro had no desire to add to his load or let his room get cluttered with junk, so he just left it alone. Instead, he walked up to the side of the wagon where the cowering merchant had insulted him. The thing was just covered in a light cloth material, so naturally the best way to make an appearance would be to show up in the direction that the passengers were not expecting, the side of the cart. The merchant could see from the back or the front where the tarp wasn't covering, but the side was different, and that's how Aro decided to reveal himself, by revealing the interior of the wagon. With his metal-coated hand, he tore at the cloth ripping it from the side of the wagon. "Attacking a passerby without provocation is a capital offense. The Rune Knights have a post in Magnolia, which isn't too far away..."

As the cloth ripped of the side of the wagon, Aro would be greeted by two interesting sights. The first would be a merchant who was actively soiling himself. “Take anything you want! Just don’t ruin my beautiful face!” he cried. It was clear that this merchant wasn’t a threat, and it was also clear that he didn’t want to go to jail. Aside from this pathetic merchant, Aro would get a glimpse of the cargo at long last. This merchant was transporting an interesting haul indeed. It was no wonder he was dressed so nicely. Each piece that he was carrying was probably worth at least a few hundred jewels. There weren’t too many, only a half-dozen, but each rested in a beautiful carrying case.
Aro would have immediately recognized these instruments for what they were: compasses. Each piece was precisely crafted and a beautiful sight to behold. These were clearly not ordinary compasses, but rather some kind of luxury version designed for the richer folks. They could probably be sold pretty easily, especially since they appeared to be handcrafted. There was no obvious serial number, so it would be hilariously easy to move these items on a black market. Best of all, the compasses were small enough that Aro could easily walk off with all of them if he wanted.
Aside from the compasses, there were a few other items of interest inside of the wagon. A few books lay scattered about the floor, though none of them had titles. A quick glance through, if Aro chose to take one, would reveal that they were business ledgers. There was also a set of keys to be found, six all total, connected to a large iron key ring. Beyond that, there was a good collection of food onboard. Most of it was trail food, so it wasn’t especially appealing, but it could save Aro from needing to hunt today if he chose to partake from the merchant’s foodstuffs. Last but not least comes the item of interest outside the wagon. Since wagons don’t pull themselves, two horses were tied to the front of it. They could either be used as beasts of burden or a food source.

Fear... A useless emotion that did nothing but allow the bigger, scarier being to get their way. Aro was the one with the leverage at the moment, as he had been attacked "unprovoked" and had also the upper hand in terms of strength. This fat and lazy merchant would have to learn his lesson, a lesson forged in pain. However, Aro would not be the one to inflict this pain, rather the merchant himself would inflict his own pain. Aro knew the danger of being in a Dark Guild, even more importantly being found out to be in a Dark Guild. He couldn't just go wandering around blowing everything up with his magic, or he'd get on somebody's radar sooner or later, especially this close to a Rune Knight outpost.
The guard who ran off wouldn't have a report that a wizard had beaten him up, rather that a random traveler had, which helped Aro stay mostly under the radar, though there weren't very many tall travelers with a blood red cape and burning red eyes. Examining the contents of the wagon, Aro made up his mind how to best punish the jumpy merchant who had just attacked him for approaching. The case of compasses was snatched up, probably alongside the whimpering of the fat man, as well as the key ring, because why not? Keys unlocked things somewhere, and keeping the lazy fatso out of it would be pleasure enough, even if Aro never found what they unlocked. Packing the compasses and a few of the business ledgers into a saddlebag on one of the horses, the caped man then turned to cause the merchant the greatest pain possible.
All of the food was cleared out of the cart. The merchant probably pleaded and begged for his life, but Aro left him nothing more than an apple and a few strips of jerky. If he truly wanted to survive, then he'd walk to Magnolia or learn to live off the land, but considering his great girth, he'd probably do neither and starve until an actually good Samaritan passed by. Regardless, the man would have been taught a lesson in what it meant to be in want. To feel the sharp pangs of hunger and know that there was no food to be delivered on a silver platter, no means by which to eat save one's own two hands. This was the punishment given by Aro, and the merciful gift as well.
Cutting the empty horse loose and sending it off, Aro cautiously eased his way on to the horse that was packed with food and the loot. He set off on a trot in the direction that the guard had run off, and quickly would find him, since Aro had not taken long to dole out the punishment to the merchant and could travel faster and longer than the boy who was bogged down by the entirety of the armor he wore. When Aro found him, he wouldn't say anything but rather toss a bag of food in the boy's direction before returning to his path towards Magnolia, which wouldn't take long at all with the added speed of the horse. You big softie... weakness is not to be tolerated in others, so why are you yourself so weak...

It appeared that things were still going according to Aro’s plan. The merchant had offered no resistance to having his things taken, the horses were cooperative, and he did indeed manage to outrun the merchant’s guard. Aro would likely never learn what happened to that merchant. It wouldn’t be surprising if he died, but there were certainly other possibilities. For now, the only consequence that Aro would be aware of was that he was burdened slightly by loot from his raid. This entire interaction had taken only a few minutes, so not much time was lost from travelling. In fact, the journey was made far more rapid by the addition of a steed. With this bestial aid, Aro was able to arrive at Magnolia Town early in the afternoon.
Magnolia was a bit of a nerve-wracking site for someone like Aro. It had a population of around 20,000, most of whom were packed into apartment complexes. The city was clearly growing fast, and it would likely stifle Aro a bit. He was a wild man, and this place would likely be a full-fledged city within a few years. Nevertheless, it was not all bad. Magnolia was densely populated at the center, but the objective today lay on the outskirts. A lone building existed on the northern outskirts of town. By the look of its exterior it used to be a bar, but the outside appearance also indicated that it had been closed until recently. A rusty sign hung over the door. In bright red paint it read “LUCIEN,” but “The Bloated Boar” was visible in the metalworking underneath. Unless the sign lied, this place was Lucien’s.
Should Aro venture inside, he would rapidly realize that the outside was merely a façade. The inside of the shop was several times larger than the outside, and that was just the first room. The walls were a dark maple; the floors and ceiling were also made of this wood. Instead of magical items all over like one would expect in a store, this room was rather bare. The walls were lined with doors every few feet, gray suits of armor stood in each of the square room’s four corners, and a maple counter closed off the back portion. The layout was odd to say the least.
Behind the counter was the only other occupant of the store. The details of this individual were distinctly hard to make out. They wore a black hooded cloak that seemed to flow as if there was a constant breeze in the room. This cloak seemed to defy every law of physics that one could think of. It flowed like water in random directions, yet it still maintained its shape at all times. Almost immediately after Aro entered the store, the cloaked figure had noticed the potential customer. Because Aro’s hearing wasn’t incredibly exceptional, he wouldn’t hear the mumbling that came from the cloak. What we would hear, after the mumbling ceased, was, “Welcome to my shop traveller. I ask no questions about your coins if you ask no questions about where my goods come from. Is there something you’re looking for today, and do you have a budget in mind?”

Aro entered the Bloated Boar with a heavy sack slung over his back. There was a mysterious cloaked figure in the back, which immediately caused the entering customer to like the style of the shop. Hooded shop owners were perfect for a black market, especially inside a closed bar that was bigger on the inside. There was some mumbling that Aro wasn't quite able to hear, followed by a formal welcome into the store. "Why yes, I do have some things in particular that I'd like to have worked on. First, I have this lovely set of compasses. I'm willing to sell all but one of them, in exchange for either straight up jewels, or any special modifications that you'd be willing to make on the compass that I will keep. The eleven other compasses should offset the cost of the modifications 100%. Also, I have some equipment that could use some work. This is what I was thinking of doing with it."

The cloak smirked. It wasn’t the face inside the cloak that smirked, but rather the swirling black mass of fabric itself seemed to twist into a smile before Aro’s very eyes. It would seem Lucien was quite pleased with the wares that had been brought to him, and also with the man standing before him. “I like your style traveller, but you’re pushing your luck a bit. Just because you can’t see my eyes it doesn’t mean they don’t exist. It’s pretty clear there are only six compasses in that case. Offhand, considering they’re pretty nice ones, I could give you something like 1,000 Jewels a pop, take it or leave it.
As far as upgrading the one you plan to keep, I can think of two fun possibilities offhand. Have you ever heard of a flashbang? They’re these little devices that shoot out a giant blast of light and sound, stunning whoever you hit. I could make your compass into a one of those, and that’d only cost you about 1,000 Jewels. On the other hand, I could make it into a fully functional mapping system of almost every location in Fiore… but you’re going to have to shell out some cash for that one. That modification doesn’t come terribly cheap: 10,000 Jewels is as low as I’ll go.
With your armor… I can see that it already some enchantment on it, and it’s pretty high quality. Adding a scavenger enhancement onto it shouldn’t be too hard. That’ll only set you back 1,500 Jewels, including making it a bit tougher ((this price is because I’m factoring in the item system adjustment on armor prices)). Your gun on the other hand, is going to be a bit on the pricey side. Upgrading a directly offensive spell, especially one that’s going to shoot a projectile larger than the barrel… that’s tricky. 6,500 Jewels for that one. All total, that’s 8,000 for the gun and armor, then another thousand or ten if you want me to do something to the compasses. I’m giving you five-k for the compasses, so your total is either 4,000 or 14,000 based on how you want me to upgrade that compass.”
((Any Upgrade costs should be added to the current cost of your gear on your profile. Exact item specs will be provided for the compasses if you choose to buy them, as it wouldn’t make sense for your to see their full effect IC before Lucien modifies them as both are non-standard items right now. I decided against the standard grenade route, as Lucien has you figured more as a sneaky-sort than a brawler.))

It didn't take long for Aro to make his decision on what he wanted to be done to the compasses. Surely his less than stellar eyesight had played tricks on him about the number of compasses, but that was beside the point. "I'll sell five of the compasses, get the map upgrade to one of them, and fix up the rest of my stuff. Should make the net total come out to 9000 Jewels, if my math is right. However... I'm sure that the compasses are worth at least 1100 each and the upgrades don't really need that much work, since you've got the main stuff already there and it's undamaged. I don't think that it would be too much to ask for the upgrade to the armor to cost 1350, the upgrade to the gun to cost 5850, and the upgrade to the compass to cost 9000. Which I think brings the net total to... 10700 jewels. That seems much better for my business, and continued business in the future, if you catch my drift."

The smirk on the cloak grew even wider as Aro haggled with Lucien on the prices. As the smile grew, so too did the cloak. One side of it flowed outwards, growing despite the laws of physics saying it shouldn't be possible. The cloak swallowed up the compasses off the table and enveloped Aro as well. He couldn't stop this, it was far faster than he could even hope to comprehend, yet it seemed to happen in slow motion at the same time. Clearly, this cloak was something special. Everything about it seemed to stand in defiance to the way the universe worked. This was just a bit of Lucien's power. What happened within the billowing folds of the cloak showcased his true talent.
In this moment, Aro would witness what a master of intimidation was truly capable of. He was surrounded in darkness. There was no possible way to escape. His limbs wouldn't move, no matter how much he might try. There was nothing Not even the smell of the shop's old wood remained. All that existed was a smooth, calm, baritone. “Let me make myself very clear on this point traveller. I respect you for having the balls to try and dictate my prices to me, but don't do it again. You'll have your prices lowered this time, but don't think you can pull this routine on me again. Just... think of this as an act of good faith. I expect to see many more Jewels from you in the future, and I'm certain they will come to my shop, one way or another.”
The darkness receded as Lucien's half threat, half compliment ended. Aro would feel his coin-purse a good deal lighter, but he would also feel a new degree of power and knowledge. His armor and weapon were more sturdy, and his mind held the knowledge of how to scavenge the remains of more creatures. All but a single compass had vanished, and the box holding them was gone as well. Should Aro inspect this remaining compass closely, he would find a new button had been added to the side of it. When pressed, it would project an interactive map of whatever building he was in. However, if he tried to use it within Lucien's shop, it would only show the room he currently stood in.
“I do believe this concludes our business for today, unless you have another proposition for me of course.”
((Conman will still effect Lucien for you, but his prices will just be lowered OOC unless you specifically want to do it IC. 10,700 Jewels have been deducted for this transaction. When posting item costs to your profile, use the amounts not altered by Conman or I'll probably forget and charge you extra when they're next upgraded by mistake.
Item Name: Thief's Compass Class: C Price: 11,000 Jewels Physical Appearance: This compass is a more ornate model than most. The specific style can be customized as the buyer wishes, but they are usually made of a precious metal. Passive Traits: A small button on the side of the compass will display a map of whatever building or area the user is currently in. Size: Roughly 4 inch diameter. Think of the dragon radar. Notes: The DM can have this compass not reveal the layout of a given location if it would completely ruin the plot of an thread for the party to know the layout. The compass will not work in any sort of anti-magic field, and anti-scrying magic cast on a location will also prevent it from functioning. ))
