It is the dawn of the Age of Magic. Until recently, Fiore has been racked by constant war with its neighboring states. So why did this war stop? It was not because there was a victor. It was because everyone realized that with the speed that technology was escalating, the only outcome of continued war was mutually assured destruction. Fiore and the surrounding states of Bosco and Seven all agreed to cease further development of technology in order to avert this doomed fate. With less money being poured into a warlike economy, and the first step towards peace taken, the end of war between the states was destined. As humans came to rely less on technology, they discovered a new source of power: magic.
That discovery gave birth to the Age of Magic. This age is still in its infancy, for the year is only X224. At first, the Age of Magic was filled with nothing but scholarly study of the nature of magic itself. This was a dangerous new source of power, and many feared that it could not be controlled properly. All feared that magic would become as dangerous as technology had been. They feared that magic would merely bring rise to another scenario for mutually assured destruction. But magic has not yet reached a level of power where countries need fear complete annihilation. It is dangerous, to be sure, but even the most powerful mages are still far weaker than the technology of the days of old. Yet their power grows every day. The mages are becoming stronger.
But technology has not vanished from the face of the Earth. Further development has stopped, and in fact the level of technology has regressed significantly compared to the Age of Technology. All of this technology did not simply vanish into dust. Adventurers can still find relics from the days of constant war. There are a multitude of artifacts scattered across Fiore that lie broken and forgotten. These weapons hold great power, and some are even said to hold power that resembles that of modern magic. Whoever finds these treasures will certainly inherit a great power. In fact, in this age, knowledge of technology has faded to the point where relics from the Age of Technology are referred to as Lost Technology. Things simply aren’t made like they used to be.
Right now, Fiore is at peace. Rumors of war with the neighboring kingdoms pop up once in a great while, but it would appear that these are nothing but rumors. The true threat lies within. Not all mages walk along a well-lit path. Those who do have recently begun forming guilds, but for every legally formed guild, there is another that is shrouded in darkness. The dark guilds show no respect for the law. Light Guilds are encouraged to defeat members of Dark Guilds if they can do so without great risk, but this is a tall order. Because the Dark Guilds are not bound by the law, they often fight to kill. The magic they wield is often more deadly than that wielded by the mages on the side of good.
If it were just the Light Guilds against the Dark Guilds, then the Dark Guilds would likely already have won. There are two other factions at work that have managed to help Fiore maintain a balance. The first of these forces is the Rune Knights. These knights are the blade of Fiore’s king. They are the standing army of Fiore, and while they are not magically strong, they have strength in numbers. There are also the dragons. Few have lived through an encounter with one, but some mages claim to have been taught magic by the dragons themselves. Little is known about the involvement of the dragons, but the simple fear of their existence has been enough to keep all but the strongest mages living in a near-constant state of fear. No one knows the true intentions of the dragons, but it is quite possible they will play an important role in the battles to come.
This is where you come into our story. You can join one of the guilds, make your own, join the Rune Knights, or even try to rough it on your own. The fate of Fiore is in your hands! Will the Light Guilds keep the dark ones at bay? Will Dragons swoop in and kill us all? Jump on in and find out!
